Bookmobile
The Martins Ferry Public Library's bookmobile provided daily service to villages, schools, nursing homes and other institutions throughout Belmont county. Beginning in 1938, the library operated eight increasingly sophisticated vehicles, starting with a small panel truck with upward-hinged exterior doors (below, from a newspaper clipping). The newest vehicle (above, a 1992 Ohio Bus/Blue Bird) had a cell phone, computer and lots of material besides books.
Bookmobile service ended May 18, 2012 due to lack of funding. The library will provide outreach service to Belmont County residents who show a great need for delivery services. Please contact the library for more information.
This 1938 panel truck served as the first 'Bonnie Belmont' bookmobile in Belmont County. The truck could only be used in good weather as it was equipped with outside shelving.
