Born Chloe Anthony Wofford on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio, Toni Morrison rose to become one of the most influential voices in American literature. A groundbreaking novelist, editor, and professor, she made history as the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, an honor she received in 1993.

Morrison’s writing is celebrated for its lyrical beauty, emotional depth, and unflinching exploration of the African American experience. Through her novels, she gave voice to stories long marginalized—stories of identity, memory, family, trauma, and resilience. Her work continues to inspire generations of readers and writers alike, cementing her place as one of the most important literary figures in American history.

Although Toni Morrison passed away on August 5, 2019, her legacy lives on through her powerful narratives and the voices she championed.
